Introduction
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service rely upon retained personnel to provide cover for emergency incidents across the County. Retained crews deal with various types of calls these include Property fires, Chemical spills and Road traffic collisions.
You can provide varous types of cover to your local station from evening, daytime and weekend.

 

To become a Retained Firefighter you must:

  • Be able to respond to your local station immediately when required.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a real wish to support your local community.
  • Have a reasonable level of physical fitness.
  • Pass the necessary entry requirements.

    Medical Requirements
  • Have a good standard of physical fitness,strength and stamina.
  • Have adequate aerobic capacity.
  • Have good respiratory (lungs) and cardiac (heart) function.
  • Do not suffer from active asthma
  • Have good vision, with or without spectacles.
  • Are not colour blind
  • Have good hearing in both ears.
 

Selection day, this will involve.....

  • Tests for use of numbers and written communication
  • Aerobic fitness testing
  • Ladder test (fear of heights)
  • Breathing apparatus test (claustrophobia)
  • Grip strength
  • Leg and back strength
  • Medical
  • Panel interview
